FIAS

European Commission combines through Safer Internet Programmes European networks and national projects aiming to improve children’s safety related to the Internet. The Safer Internet plus programme’s aim is to promote safer use of the Internet and new online technologies, particularly for children, and to fight against illegal content and content unwanted by the end-user, as part of a coherent approach by the European Union.

The Finnish Internet Awareness and Safety (FIAS) project 2010-2012 is the national joint project of three individual organizations: Save the Children Finland, The Mannerheim League for Child Welfare (MLL) and the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA). The project brings together three significant actors and their professional efforts on a common mission to improve children’s safety in relation to the digital media in Finland.

Finnish Internet Awareness and Safety project consists of three main activities:

  • Save the Children Finland acts as the coordinator of the project and maintains the Hotline
  • Helpline is run by MLL
  • Awareness work is coordinated by FICORA

Both child welfare organizations are actively doing awareness raising, training various target groups and act on the social net – Save the Children providing adult presence and support and MLL providing both adult’s presence and support and peer support. FICORA is responsible of organizing the Safer Internet Day in the national level and as part of the European cooperation. The best practices are shared in the European networks.

“Discover the digital world together...safely!”

Safer Internet Day 2012 – the ninth edition of the event – will take place on Tuesday 7 February 2012, centred on the theme ‘Connecting generations and educating each other’, where we encourage users young and old to ‘discover the digital world together...safely!’.

In Europe and beyond, thousands of activities will be organised by national Safer Internet Day committees to reflect on the theme, which aims to demonstrate how new technologies can help to connect generations. The campaign will encourage users, both young and old, to join together in creating positive online experiences, to share both knowledge and wisdom, but also to support each other when things might be risky or, indeed, go wrong.

The 30 national centres in the Insafe network (the 27 EU member states, plus Iceland, Norway and Russia) and partners in more than 35 other countries will bring children, young people and adults together in local, regional, national and online events all around the world to reflect on the issue.
