Net safety work

Save the Children Finland engages in Internet safety work with the objective of improving children's safety and well-being as well as children's rights in the domain of modern information and communications technology. This work is based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and in particular on children's rights relating to the new opportunities created by new information technologies and to the specific threats and problems that these involve:

  • right to life
  • right to privacy
  • right to knowledge and right to protection from harmful materials
  • right to protection from violence and exploitation
  • right to protection from sexual exploitation
  • right to receive help in case of being or having been subjected to sexual exploitation
  • We maintain a special website called Nettivihje (Northern Hotline), which is a tipline intended for reporting on unlawful content on the Internet. Its aim is to promote detection and deletion of unlawful material on the Internet, and to identify children that are subjected to sexual abuse or appear in child pornography content and to help these children through national and international co-operation
  • By means of training, information and publications intended for professionals working with and for children or providing services used by children, we increase these professionals' knowledge and understanding of things relating to new information technologies and children's safety and well-being
  • We offer training for moderators working for web services that are popular with children and young people
  • We produce and distribute quality materials supporting work for Internet safety, and offer the Hiiripiiri (Mouse House) and Hiirimutaattori (Mouse Mutant) e-learning and playing websites for children in order to promote their skills and knowledge as Internet users
  • We increase the presence of trusted adults in web services frequently used by children and young people where we organise supporting chats on different themes under moderation by these adults.
  • We do advocacy and influencing work and engage in multifield co-operation in the domain of new information and communication technologies and their safe use by children
  • We work internationally in close co-operation with the INHOPE and Insafe networks and in the framework of the international Save the Children Europe Group
  • These activities are funded mainly by the Safer Internet Plus programme of the European Commission, the Finnish Slot Machine Association RAY, and the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Finland.

Save the Children Finland currently runs two Internet safety undertakings that form part of the Safer Internet Plus programme of the European Commission:
